At Nuview Bridge Early College High School, students aren’t just going to class; they’re getting a head start on their future. Here, teenagers step into real college courses while still in high school, earning credits long before most students even apply.
Konner Castro, a 12th grader, is currently enrolled in 3 college classes, all motivated by his goal of completing the IGETC. When he first started taking college classes, he felt overwhelmed but over time he got used to taking advantage of these college opportunities. He participates in volleyball both in and out of school, and has created a well rounded schedule that allows him to still have fun, while maintaining grades. Some of the benefits he has noticed is his preparedness for college and life outside of high school. “Focus on yourself and most importantly your future while taking college classes, because at the end of the day, once you graduate from high school many of you will go your separate ways”, was the heartfelt words of inspiration from Konner.
Christian Flores, who is also a 12th grader, has decided to take part in the college classes to graduate with an Associates degree. While his sleep has become lighter, his motivation has only become stronger since starting college classes. He balances coursework with sports by keeping in mind Student before Athlete. He has noticed confidence in public speaking and preparation for his future. He finds the pressure of taking these college classes, as an internal goal that he has set for himself. Overall, college classes have given Christian structure and familiarized him with what college will be like. His advice to others, is to take each class with purpose and take the time to learn the material.
Lastly, Yatziry Torres who is a current 12th grader, has found college classes to have both a positive and negative impact. Taking college classes at such an early stage can be mentally draining , especially if you’re involved in a lot of sports. Yatziry is involved in soccer, cheer, stunt, and was this year’s football manager. With such a tight schedule she found it a bit difficult to make time for college, therefore decided to take a break from taking courses this semester. However, from her experience with taking college classes, she now has more confidence and feels well prepared for college. “Be aware of what you want, communicate with your teachers about your mental health, and it’s okay to take a short break”, is the advice she is giving to students who are interested in taking college classes.
