Student phone dependency has become one of the most talked-about issues in schools today. From hallways to classrooms, it is common to see students scrolling through social media, texting friends, or watching videos between assignments. While smartphones offer convenience and connection, many students admit they struggle to put them down.
Aubriella Delgado described her phone as both a helpful tool and a constant distraction. “I use my phone for everything, homework reminders, alarms, talking to friends or family, even checking my grades,” she explained. Like many students, she relies on apps for organization and communication. However, she admitted that what starts as a quick check often turns into much more. “I’ll pick it up to respond to one text and then 30 minutes later I’m still scrolling,” she said. This pattern reflects how easily productive time can turn into wasted time.

The impact on academics is one of the biggest concerns. Aubriella acknowledged that her phone sometimes interferes with her focus during study sessions.
Phone dependency also affects sleep and mental health. Aubriella shared that she often stays up later than she should because she is on her phone. “I tell myself I’ll go to bed after one more video, but it’s never just one,” she said. Losing sleep can lead to tiredness at school and difficulty focusing the next day.

Aubriella has started setting small limits for herself so she’s, “not tempted to grab it,” she said. While she admits its not always easy, Aubriella recognizes that change starts with awareness. Student phone dependency is a complex issue that affects many young people, including Aubriella Delgado. While smartphones provide connection and convenience, they can also create distractions, stress, and unhealthy habits. Aubriella’s experience shows that balance is possible but requires effort and self-discipline. As she put it, “Phones aren’t bad, but we have to learn how to use them instead of letting them use us.” Her words highlight the importance of responsibility in a world where technology is always within reach.
