Thanksgiving is the day you get to eat yummy food and spend time with your loved ones, celebrating different traditions. This day became a holiday when we won an American victory of Satagora and George Washington made it a national holiday in 1777. Many people view this holiday differently and all have different traditions and different things they look forward to. I interviewed 3 different people, Jocelyn and Iris who is 15 years old, and Valeria that is a preschool teacher to see their view on thanksgiving. One of my first questions I asked was, “What does Thanksgiving mean to you?”
Jocelyn stated, “What Thanksgiving means to me is a way to show your respect to your family and can showcase what your thankful for.”
Iris, “ Thanksgiving means to me is a day to be thankful for all the blessing in life.”
Valeria, “Thanksgiving to me means family, friends and loved ones coming together to eat and unite. As I’ve gotten older i’ve become more appreciative of the time I have with family and friends. People become so busy with their lives that sometimes it’s hard to have everyone together. The holidays is always a time were I reflect of the things im grateful for, the things I’ve accomplished and just appreciate that I have so many people that I love and love me together. It’s also a time of reflection for what we are all blessed with- loved ones still here, food on the table, roof over our head.
“What was the most memorable thanksgiving, why?”
Jocelyn, “ I don’t remember what year it was but all my family came over and we played board games until 1 in the morning.”
Iris, “My most memorable Thanksgiving was last years thanksgiving because I spent it with both sides of my family and I had really fun time playing games and catching up.”
Valeria, “ The most memorable Thanksgiving was last year! I got to see my sister purchase her first home! We got to spend Thanksgiving there it was really fun, It was definitely a proud sister moment!
What is your favorite part about Thanksgiving and why?
Jocelyn, “Probably cooking and be able to make all of our recipes.”
Iris,” My favorite part about Thanksgiving is when my whole family is together and we just have fun time, hanging out and making food.”
Valeria, “ Spending time with family! Everyone is always so busy with their lives that it’s hard to catch up! spending time with them and just really disconnecting from the day to day life is nice!”
Do you have a family tradition, if so what is it?
Jocelyn, “We all stand in a circle and say our prayers.”
Iris, “Yes, I do have a family tradition, every year my family comes to my house and we all make a dish, eat, play games, and enjoy each others company.”
Valeria, “Not really! these last years we have been rotating Thanksgiving to different family members now that we’re older everyone wants to host! but no specific tradition. “
Everyone has a different concept of Thanksgiving and really shows how everyone has different situations while some visit family members and others are celebrating their families accomplishments. How do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
