Senior slump is a common challenge for high school seniors, especially during their final semester. It affects many students in different ways. At Nuview Bridge Early College High School, we take a closer look at how senior slump impacts students and their academic experience.
Kevin Valdez, a current senior, explained that as graduation approaches, many students stop putting in the same effort to pass their classes. He noted that senior slump often leads to lower grades, with students ignoring assignments and even skipping school. He also mentioned that students’ motivation can depend on their goals after high school, such as attending college, entering the workforce, or joining the military, which influences how seriously they approach their coursework. He believes that schools could keep students more engaged by offering hands-on projects and creating more flexible schedules.
Current senior Denys Havrylko stated that taking winter college classes makes burnout more likely. He feels that senior slump negatively affects academic performance due to the heavy workload assigned by teachers, which he believes should be lightened. He strongly believes that maintaining a healthy balance between school, work, and extracurricular activities helps him avoid senior slump. Lastly, he acknowledged that senior slump will always exist, but students have the ability to control how it affects them.
Angel Gonzalez, had mentioned that personally senior slump affects his academic performance and attendance as school is ending. He feels as though most seniors are just exhausted and wanting school to be over. He did make a great point by stating that senior slump can have long term effects on habits after graduation, mostly for those that are planning on going to college. He strongly believes that stress and anxiety about the future have a great contribution to a decrease in senior’s motivation, however we should continue to uplift each other and ourselves daily.
