Artificial Intelligence in education is a widespread topic with potential and pitfalls. To gain a comprehensive understanding, I explore viewpoints of student Johnny, along with insights from teachers Mr. Clarke and Mr. Botros. As I gather different points of views on the topic of Artificial Intelligence being beneficial here at our school campus of NBECHS? I asked multiple questions to each individual and was able to comprehend that there are many advantages of using AI even as an instructor and disadvantages to both teachers and students
“I find AI helpful for subjects that I find challenging. I think AI shouldn’t be something to be taught at school, but if you use it to guide you in a problem, then you solve it then yes. I think AI makes school both more and less engaging and enjoyable because if your using AI just to get to get answer without trying it takes out the fun of solving/answering the problem but that’s what makes it enjoyable because you could finish an assignment without being stressed and takes less time trying to solve a problem or writing essays,” Johnny Pinion, noted as he expressed his opinions on AI being helpful and at the same time it’s making students less studious and not develop critical thinking.
As Johnny reflected on the benefits and cons of AI he also points out that by using Ai it could save time, however the amount of time you save by using AI can make it worse. As
I was interviewing Mr. Botros he gave key points that could make an individual change the way we see AI. Mr. Botros mentions how it might save us time, however he noticed that in his Honors, and Regular Physics class. Classwork is done efficiently, and sometimes homework is done with AI and students are denied even if they perfectly know they use AI. But this is not the worry because when quiz or test are given to the students the score that they received on their homework is quite the opposite on the results of quiz or test day. The average decreases by an unbelievable amount. Just like Johnny mentioned that AI could help someone in a subject they find challenging step-by-step but Mr. Botros counters it by saying AI could help simplify it but just based on his class AI could also give you advance or college formulas for a problem while being in high school.
“I use AI to simplify my lessons in a way that my students could understand. I tend to use AI to make the information clear and not make my students be wonder about multiple things at the same time, especially during steps in the lab. I have many concerns about AI as I would consider these privileges to some because not every single one of us has access to AI, making it unfair for some. I think it is okay to use AI but the dilemma is whether it is okay during class or inside our campus… I would say yes as long is under supervision or approved by your instructor and credit is giving to AI’s when generating weather images or extending to even graphs or charts,” Mr.Botros stated as he believes that AI would be more of a function inside our schoocampus if it’s being used under supervision, being verified, and always given credit.
After reflecting while Mr.Botros was being interviewed he came to realize as I did that AI could have more potential if it is being used in an ethical way. As mentioned above, Mr. Botros himself uses Ai to benefit himself and make his lessons and labs more understandable and work out more efficiently. However, he makes sure to note that it’s okay to us as long is under supervision, when students are using it in campus or class. He pointed out how this could potentially create an unfairness due to not all of us not having the same access to these privileges as we could say so. His perspective of always giving credit as he allows AI to generate images, charts, graphs, and more in his class under certain circumstances. Which is very hard for some to do, by hearing and seeing something is generated from AI many would think this is unacceptable but it would be the quite opposite where is allowed and welcome. Which is why Mr.Botros mentions how it has to be passed through the instructor and verified where there isn’t miscommunication. Helping out the student create a better presentation or work while helping out the teacher by gaining ideas on how they might allow AI even further if being used the correct way and standards being set also mentioned by Mr. Clarke.
“I personally used AI to plan out my lectures and improve it to a level where students are able to comprehend my lessons. I think we shouldn’t prohibit AI, nor should we allow it fully. Instead the school or district should start developing policies that could be placed against this way students don’t depend but instead used it to gather background information. This is because most of the time Ai is used in my class when there are writing sections, particularly essays. But like I said everything could work out as long as there’s policies that should be developed to not depend on AI. At the same time it serve as a tool to gather background information. Which should be verified, this way we could keep a healthy bond with AI in our school campus.
Johnny’s, Mr. Botros, and Mr. Clarke reflect on Artificial Intelligence being beneficial or not being worthwhile in our school campuses of NBECHS. As Johnny reflected on the benefits and cons of AI, he also points out that by using AI it could save time, however the amount of time you save by using AI can make it worse. As I was interviewing Mr. Botros, he gave key points that could make an individual change the way we see AI. After reflecting while Mr. Botros was being interviewed, he came to realize, as I did, that AI could have more potential if it is being used in an ethical way. “I think we shouldn’t prohibit AI, nor should we allow it fully, but instead the school or district should start developing policies that could be placed against this way students don’t depend but instead used to gather background information,” said Mr. Clarke
