Uniforms have been a topic of discussion lately, as the school has considered requiring them. However, are uniforms a good idea? An article from Conard Lake Steam Academy, another public charter school like ours, explains why it’s important for the school to require students to wear uniforms. Some of the benefits are a safe environment, since many kids get bullied for what they wear. Although if everyone is wearing uniforms, no one will get bullied for the clothes they wear.
Also promotes school spirit since everyone is wearing school outfits. Save time and money for the parents, seeing that many parents have to buy a new wardrobe for school. As well as saving time in the morning with their kid getting ready. It also helps with putting focus on school because students wouldn’t be focused on how they look. Nonetheless, shouldn’t students be able to express themselves? Why is it so important for students to express themselves? In an article by Kids First, it explains why it’s so important to let kids express themselves. It goes in-depth and explains how this can help students develop an identity of their own. This is the only thing many teens/students have control of. Letting teens/students express themselves will also help them understand what they love. As many turn out, they love fashion and go on into the fashion world, or like others who love makeup and go into cosmetology. Self-expression is more than just clothes is a way a person can express how they feel or feel safe. Yet, what do the kids in Nuview think about uniforms? Is it a great idea or a horrible one?

As I went on and interviewed a few staff, some brought up good points. Mrs.Lopez brought up how clothes are what make students feel comfortable. As well as asking a good question, why now on adding uniforms? That question stuck with me, so for a better understanding, I went and interviewed the vice principal, Mrs.Phillips. While I went on with the interview, I did get an understanding of why we might be getting uniforms. The reason behind it is the dress code; many students don’t follow the dress code. So, for them to solve the problem, the decision may be that school uniforms are a good idea. As well as to show more school spirit and to proudly show our school outside. The uniforms are going to be a blue polo shirt, or every grade having their own color. When asking about the pros and cons, she explained very well. The pros are parents don’t spend so much money on back-to-school shopping. Also, students do not have to think about what they are going to wear. But what do the students think?
I went and interviewed a few students for this Leilani, a student who loves to express themselves through their clothes. She explains how it would feel like students won’t be able to express themselves or feel comfortable with themselves. Many students don’t get to do that at home, but one place where they can express themselves is. As she explains, they should know what they can and can’t wear, especially for school, and set more ground rules on that. As I went on and interviewed other students about uniforms. Many students liked the idea of maybe Polos, but to make it engaging for the students to wear. Instead of something that they won’t like very much. So, should we add uniforms or should we add more structure? For that answer, I can’t tell you that’s all up to the school, but like how Leilani said, “a lot of people show their style through outfits, and just how they are in general as a person.”
